Should corporal punishment be permitted in schools?
Corporal punishment is a type of punishment where hitting or striking is permitted. In most (or maybe all) school systems nationwide, corporal punishment is NOT permitted. Teachers and administrators (e.g. principals, counselor, etc.) are NOT allowed to strike the students. In most cases, parents are also not allowed to strike their children. These days almost anyone who strikes a child can be arrested by the police for assault and battery.
When I was in the 2nd grade, my teacher believed heavily in corporal punishment. She would often use paddles and other objects to discipline us. The School Board in my city decided to fire her because of complaints from students and parents. At that time corporal punishment was not as taboo as it is today. Parents and administrators did feel, however, that the teacher was abusing her students; she was using excessive force in disciplining her students.
On Youtube.com and found several incidents of teachers disciplining students by striking them about their face and body. My question is two fold:
- First, what is your opinion of corporal punishment? Do you agree or disagree with this form of punishment?
- And finally, how is corporal punishment looked upon by parents, teachers and school administrators in your country?
I have included the links from Youtube.com for your review. I should preface these video clips by saying that they may or not be considered corporal punishment.

Of course when it comes to corporal punishment in schools I disagree that it should be used, but I think parents have the right to use some form of physical punishment with their children as long as they have a limit.
Corporal punishment was more likely accepted when my parents were growing up, but now it is not as commonly accepted in my country. My parents feel that punishment is a personal issue, that should be taking care of at home not in schools.
I’ve kind of this agreement with the corporal punishment “specialy at the school from our teachers”.
Corporal punishment, it was so helpful to make my life as strict as it is nowadays beacuse sometimes I think about myself if I made something wrong to got that kind of punishment from them. “Somehow I say also: shame on youe,Sary (me)”
Differents kind of panishment:
* My father, he used to slap me on the face, because I was like the evil for him in my childhood. When I became a teenager, he changed the way to deal with me. He sometimes punish me by saying, you can’t go to anywhere on the weekend or taking my car key. “That was suck”. Nowadays, he’s telling me some tips and advice.
* My teachers, they used to hit us by them hands as slaping on our faces and other kind which as what you are going to see at this video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9ItC4GmX8E. “That’s just if something really bad had happen between us”
Well, as one of the member at Youtube wrote about that teacher;
sialchild said: “f***ing bastard teacher. i hope he goes to hell. if i was in that class i swear i’ll beat that f***er. how can he punch a girl? f***ing loser. why dont u punch someone ur own size and see wat u get in return.”
** I totaly agree with what “Sialchild” said above.
*** He isn’t a man enough or yet because if he did the same thing for a guy he will know that he will get something worse than that. ***
Thanks for the topic.
The teacher must be a role model for the students. If you are a teacher that mean you will teach everything in the class such as the knowledge of your major, the politeness, and how could the students talk with the others people inside the school or outside. Also, if you need to teach anyone you must be polite to be acceptable person before to be as a teacher. I believe that the child doesn’t learn anything when the teacher hit him accept the blow up. I mean you couldn’t teach anyone obligatory.
Strongly I disagree corporal punishment in school. Teachers can’t take care of children as well as their parents. Corporal punishment affects people’s life deeply, so if teachers can’t take responsibility of student’s life, they shouldn’t hit their students.
In my country, while we think corporal punishment is one of the big issue at the school nowadays, it was [a] long time ago; such as grandmother and mother’s generation. This is because people used to think corporal punishment is one [type] of education. For my parents, it is (crucial) punishment, but for young people include me, it is extreamly awful.
I think punishment is very useful to the students, especialy male students, but it should be not at that way like an arabic teacher or a korean, I mean not slaping to students, because it is kind of hamblling, so I agree but they can punish students by stick nothing else. Now, in my home country (Saudi Arabi), punishment is illegal in the school.
What about if my parents punish me ?
It is a good question, for me as a muslim parents have all rights to do to thier children whatever they want, because they are the reason for us to be here at this life. In my country parents can do to their children what they want to do, except, of course, kill them.

I agree to punish the students but not in the elementary school, the teacher should be carefull with the students to let them like school. because if the teacher punish them they will be afraid from the teacher and they wil hate to go to school. in the middle and high school, the teacher should punish the students but with out battery.
if the teacher doesn’t respect me. i will never respect him. if i do something wrong, it is ok but not in front of the class. he should talk to me after class.
when i was in high school, my father said to my teachers “do what ever you want if my son did something wrong.” this usual in my country fathers say that.
i think if the theacher can’t punish the student, the school is going to be disorder.

I can not agree corporal punishments in the schools. This is about being educated in the family. And punishment mechanism is family, not teachers, however,in the elementary school, families should permit teachers for little punishments
Strongly, I am against with corporal punishment. I think hitting or striking is not allowed to everybody. There’s no proper reason. without that teachers can find any other way to punish the students. Most school has a policy their own. The students have to be treated with that policy, not teacher’s personal way. They must not be changed from it. Actually, in my country, corporal punishment still exists as you can see that videos. I feel very ashamed with that. some people in my country thing that corporal punishment with paddles because they think some students are really bad to treat with only policy. However, I think corporal punishment is not punishment. That is just violence.
I don’t think girls/boys separation in highschool is a good idea.
The Chinese character of ‘human’ is formed with two lines, and each means one person. The character involves that human should be with others.
Symmetry with others is necessary for completion of human being, and of course, also important for students.
Students can learn how to be with others in school. Since the half of the world population is men and the other is women, isn’t it important to be with opposite sex in teenages?

I too remember the days when principals had a paddle in their desk, and any behavior that was completely unacceptable would constitute a paddling on the behind. These days, any physical punishment by adults is completely unacceptable. Considering that most parents would be uncomfortable with other adults giving this kind of discipline, I agree that paddles probably should not be used at school. Along the same lines, teachers should not be slapping wrists with rulers.
Not to say that I am against this kind of discipline; I just think these methods should be used at home by parents and at their own discretion. My mom’s spankings were quite effective, and as long as they are given properly, I see nothing wrong with that form of disciplining. With the way law suits occur in this country, it is best that this discipline is only used cautiously by a student’s parent. Let me clarify that by “this type of discipline,” I mean a slightly stinging slap on the behind—anything else would be too much.
All in all, I think that any violence, whether it be a slapping on the behind for disciplinary reasons or a student pushing around a teacher should stay completely out of the classroom. The environment should be a learning environment that is a safe place for everyone. Any student who touches anyone else inappropriately should automatically be removed from the classroom. The same goes for any teacher who touches a student or another member of the faculty. While I realize that sometimes teachers end up needing to discipline students because they have not been disciplined at home and that I just admitted spankings are an effective punishment, the truth is that the teacher is NOT the parent. Therefore, he or she should sent serious discipline cases to the administrators who can then use detention, parent conferences, or suspension as they see fit.
